Why all the huff over plastic straws?

Plastic straws cause direct harm to our oceans. We use over 500 million plastic straws every day in America, and most of those end up in our oceans, polluting the water and killing marine life. This is a massive problem causing direct and undisputed harm to our oceans and marine animals.

I thought you could recycle plastic?

Although we all feel good about recycling, it is far from a perfect system. In fact, a significant amount of the items you try to recycle often end up in the landfill & oceans. This may be because the items are contaminated with food, are not the correct material, or in the case of straws - they are too lightweight to make it through the mechanical recycling sorters. Recycling has also become a big business, but unfortunately only certain items make these companies money... such as glass and larger items. And although not everyone operates this way, we all know that businesses will follow the money and focus on what makes them profit. And small plastic straws are not profitable to recycle.

How do they end up in the oceans?

Humans! Out of 500 million plastic straws a day, we only need a small percentage to be disposed of improperly to create a major problem. Maybe they are littered, blown off a trash bag, washed down a storm drain, or missed in the recycling process. Don't forget, gutters and storm drains ultimately go to the ocean!

Once they are in the water - what happens?

Plastic does not dissolve or biodegrade. This is the big problem. It breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces called micro-plastics - but it doesn't go away. It is estimated that 71% of seabirds and over 30% of turtles have ingested these small plastic pieces. If you're curious how that can hurt the animals - check out this video of a turtle.

How is CurrentStraw different?

The solution for straws, like all plastic items, can be incredibly simple. We need to move away from "single-use" items - and start thinking longterm and multi-use. If 500 million plastic straws are used every day- think how much plastic thrown away that equals every year! Now imagine if every single day, those 500 million people didn't buy a new straw... because they had a permanent solution. That's what we provide. A permanent straw you can use over and over and over again.

What about your materials... are they better for the environment?

YES! The biggest impact you can have is simply having an option that you can use over and over again instead of single use item. The practice of reusing something is what has the largest benefit for the environment. And our steel straws are designed to be a permanent straw that you can use for years and years! Our carrying cases are made from bamboo, one of the fastest growing and most environmentally approved fibres on the plant. Our silicone tips are long lasting and eco-approved.  Extensive testing has determined that silicone is not toxic to aquatic or soil organisms, is not hazardous waste, and can be recycled after a lifetime of use, unlike plastic straws. You have likely noticed more and more of your cooking items are being made with silicone, as it provides a durable, long lasting, and environmentally sustainable material.
